Visual Artist Andy Perez and Break Beat Poet Idris Goodwin respond to contemporary pop culture and current events through paint and poem.

On Dec 2, these two creatives come together at Revelry Gallery in NULU. Andy will unveil a new series based upon Goodwin's new poetry collection CAN I KICK IT

Deemed “an ode to and embodiment of black lyric excellence” by the American Library Association, CAN I KICK IT? Is Goodwin’s latest collection of break beat poetry. He infuses his work with the topical and poly referential aesthetics of hip hop.  Similarly Perez's colorful and clever work plays with iconography. His portrait of Colonel Sanders was recently featured in a KFC commercial in France. Taking cue from Goodwin’s word Perez has created 10 new pieces in his signature style, layering bold colors and textures.

“The poems in “Can I Kick It” are current and super-relevant.” says Perez “I have created a new series of work responding to Idris’ words. To keep with the hip-hop vibe each piece is in a square format to reference the size and shape of a record.”

Alongside Perez's work Goodwin will perform the poems that correspond to each of the paintings and share the mic with a few special community voices.
